Intercommuncal Clashes In Eastern Nigeria's Ebonyi State Today Kill At Least 50 People

(Reuters) - Clashes between rival ethnic groups in eastern Nigeria's Ebonyi state on Saturday killed at least 50 people, the state government spokesman said.

The clashes erupted from a long running rivalry between the Ezza and Ezilo people that periodically flares up into violence. There was no suggestion it had anything to do with wider security problems in the country stemming from a violent Islamist insurgency that set off a wave of deadly bombs on Christmas Day.  "Up to 60 people died in the violence.

It is difficult to give the exact figure because when we visited Ezilo community, which was scene of the incident today, villagers were still bringing out corpses," Ebonyi state spokesman Onyekachi Eni told Reuters by telephone.

"Fifty corpses were shown to us", Onyekachi Eni said.

Violent disputes over land are common in Africa's most populous country because the majority of its 160 million people are subsistence farmers living in rural areas with few means of arbitrating disputes.

Hundreds of people are killed every year in such clashes, many going unreported because of a lack of reliable information about them.

State Commissioner of Police Adeola Adeniji said the divisional crime officer for the area was killed in the violence. "Mobile police have been sent there and the inspector general has directed more to come," Adeniji said.

Chioma Oke, an Ezilo who survived the clashes, said they started around 5 a.m. "We heard sporadic gunshots and we began to run. They burned our houses. They said they were retaliating for an attack on them last year," she said.

A female inmate condemned to hanging for homicide has escaped from a prison in Hadejia, Jigawa State where she was awaiting her sentence.

Rabi Ismail, a popular actress in Kannywood, the Hausa version of the Nigerian movies industry, was recently convicted for the manslaughter of her boy friend and fellow artiste.

She was sentenced to death by hanging by a Kano High Court. It will be recalled that prosecution evidence showed that Ismail drowned her boyfriend at the Bagauda Lake Resort in the state.

Anas Umar Mai Nasiha, Groom-To-Be Died On Wedding Day in Sokoto, Nigeria

Nothing indicated that a tragedy was lurking few hours to the marriage between Anas Umar Mai Nasiha and Saadatu Malami Ibrahim Kure. They courted for three years and were to wed only for the groom to die on the wedding day.

Arrangements for the wedding which was scheduled to take place Saturday December 17, 2011 at 9:00am had already been concluded. However, before the blissful event, fire engulfed the groom’s newly built house at Nakasari area of Sokoto South local government area.

Twenty-year-old Anas of Kofar Taramniya area was asleep in the new house that on fire, Weekly Trust learnt that the fire actually started in the night of Friday December 16, which was his wedding eve. Anas reportedly decided to sleep in the house to protect the items for the marriage ceremony which were kept in the house.

Weekly Trust learnt that he slept in the new house alone. Before he went to bed that fateful night, he was said to have put on the generator. However, it was gathered that few hours later electricity was restored by PHCN. This it was suspected led to electrical fault resulting in the fire disaster.

The ugly incident was noted to have occurred at about 3:00am. Anas’ uncle, Malam Ummaru Mai Nasiha, said he was in state of total confusion when early Saturday morning some people came to his house to inform him of the incident.

Malam Ummaru who is a younger brother to Anas’ father and responsible for his upbringing, added that “having heard the shocking news, I swiftly moved out of my resident to the house of the deceased.”

He said “on reaching there, I discovered that men of the Sokoto State Fire Service had already put out the fire and removed the dead body which was burnt beyond recognition. The house was razed down completely.”

The would-be bride Saadatu was traumatized by the incident. “In the morning of our wedding day, some people brought the news that my husband-to-be has died in a fire incident. Initially, I thought it was a joke, but when I realized it was true, I was completely devastated, it was the most agonizing thing I had ever experienced.”

She, however, said the sermons and prayers of her parents and friends helped her in bearing the shocking situation.

Nigerian Pregnant Virgin? Raped By Her Cousin, Now Pregnant…Medical Test Shows She's Still a Virgin

Miss Chinelo
Nigerian teenage lady, Chinelo who was raped by her own cousin, leaving her hymen intact but resulted in a pregnancy.

Chinelo, a fair-complexioned young lady, narrated to Saturday Vanguard how her second cousin, Onyeka, put her in the family way. She had gone to her mother’s cousin’s house in Ihiala, Anambra state for her UME exams and had slept on the same bed with her second cousin, Onyeka.

According to her,  “I woke very late, very dizzy even his mother noticed and asked me whether I was feeling alright that morning. I told her I was okay but when I went to the bathroom, I discovered I was wet but did not feel any pain. I asked him but he smiled and waved it off. I did not disclose to anybody. I just cleaned up. “I finished my mensuration five days before then. I also wrote my NECO there but left after a week I finished my exams. I went back to Onitsha, and on the 27th of July, I came to Lagos to my sister’s house. There I missed my period. I told her and she advised that we should wait for some days, saying it might be a shift,” Chinelo said.

Chinelo began to notice symptoms of pregnancy after a month. “A month later, I felt sick. My sister and I thought it was malaria. But what later convinced my sister was when I started vomitting. Our neighbour advised we should go to the hospital. My sister obliged and we went to General Hospital, Aguda. They even gave me money for the test.

“It was on Sunday, so the lab personnel did not come. We returned home and went back the following day. A test was conducted and we waited for about 30 minutes. When the result came out, they wrote ‘malaria not seen and pregnancy positive’.

“While waiting, my sister had also taken her sick daughter to see a doctor. I approached a woman sitting close to me to explain the result to me and she looked at me and asked whose result was it, saying it indicates pregnancy. When my sister came, I gave it to her and she asked how come I became pregnant.

“I told her I didn’t know that I didn’t have a boyfriend. She took me to their head nurse who also is a counsellor. She tried to convince me but I maintained my position knowing it was the truth. They decided to take a virginity test on me with the aid of a machine. The result came out and it was confirmed that I am still virgin,” she narrated.

Then the pressure came. The medical team and her sister probed further and Chinelo broke the ice saying: “I remembered the incident in my aunty’s house and I asked whether if someone was wet without making love could result into pregnancy? They asked me who was with me and I told them how I saw myself wet that morning when I woke up. I further told them how I drank the juice and slept off. I did not know what happened again.

The medical team and her sister concluded that pregnancy could occur without a penetrative intercourse since her virginity was intact.

Marrying One of My Fans Is the Best Thing to Happen To Me, Says Nollywood Actress Uche Elendu

Uche Elendu, a top Vivian actress shocked many people when she opted to marry her United Arab Emirates-based fan. Today, against all odds, she’s not only a proud mother of a beautiful baby girl; the actress will be walking down the aisle with her man on January 7, 2012.

She speaks to Vanguard about her upcoming wedding and where she intends to observe her honeymoon with her man.

Excerpts:

Q: We learnt that your white wedding is coming up on the 7th of January.
A: Yes, I’m preparing for my white wedding which comes up, as you rightly said on the 7th of January, 2012. My man is in town. All is set for the wedding and I ‘m believing God that the wedding will be a success. This is the happiest moment in my life.

Q: And you have done your shopping already?
A: Yes, I did my shopping early this month in the UK.
Q: Who is your Chief bridesmaid?
A: Queen Okoye, of course. And I have other Nollywood stars in my bridal train: Chika Ike, Empress Njamah, Solomon, Chidi Mokeme and a host of others.

Q: Have you chosen a place or the country where you want to observe your honeymoon?
A: Yes, the country is Cayman Islands, in the United States of America. We will be taking off immediately after our wedding on January 7.

Q: We learnt you married your fan
A: That’s the way God designed it for us. My husband was not the only fan I had at the time I met him. I used to have a lot of fans but I believe he was the only one that was meant for me. I’m convinced he was although it was not really easy for him to win me over initially.

I think we were meant for each other. God designed my husband for me. That’s why our marriage worked. I usually get calls from my fans, and each time I receive calls, I try to appreciate them, talk to them politely. But I don’t make them my friends.

In the case of my husband, he was very persistent. So, when the opportunity called for us to meet each other, we discovered it was going to be more than mere fan. There and then, we became friends and later got married. We already have a child together after our traditional marriage.

Suicide Warning...Two Days Earlier
Excerpts from Saharareporters:

Several sources said the tipping point for Ovie was a proposed wedding to his heartthrob, Ochuko also known as Ariete. The wedding had to be postponed because Ovie couldn't afford the elaborate ceremony. “They had to postpone the wedding date so that Ovie could find enough money to throw a big wedding,” said one source.

A friend of the deceased confirmed that Ariete was four months pregnant at the time Ovie committed suicide.

Ovie was buried on December 26th in a public cemetery in Warri, Delta State after traditional rites were administered. The family did not carry out an autopsy, and neither were the police contacted.

Possible Talks With Boko Haram Via "Back Channels" - National Security Adviser

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian security services are considering making contact with moderate members of shadowy Islamist sect Boko Haram via "back channels," even though explicit talks are officially ruled out, the national security adviser said on Friday.

Speaking a day after emergency meetings with Goodluck Jonathan and top security officials in response to a spate of deadly Christmas Day bombings by the sect, National Security Adviser General Owoye Andrew Azazi told Reuters officials were looking at broadening efforts beyond pure security measures -- including addressing northern economic grievances.

"Even if government has a policy saying that there's no negotiation that you can't reach out to Boko Haram, intelligence must find a way," Azazi said in an interview. "I don't think it's everybody (in Boko Haram) who believes in the level of violence ... That's why you could have other channels for discussion ... It's something we could pursue."

Azazi declined to comment on whether contact with moderate members of Boko Haram had already been made. "From our perspective, you try back channels. And when you are trying back channels, that's not when the president will come and announce to the whole of Nigeria that 'I'm talking to mister A or mister B,'" he said.

Azazi's comments signal an apparent shift from treating Boko Haram purely as a security issue that needs to be tackled militarily. Jonathan has been criticized for ignoring political avenues that might heal the north-south rift partly underpinning the conflict.

The death toll from a bomb attack on a church just outside Nigeria's capital Abuja on Christmas Day rose to 37, with 57 people wounded, emergency services said on Friday, underscoring the pressing need to deal with the threat of Islamist militancy.

Azazi ruled out explicit negotiations of the type that ended the conflict in the oil-rich Niger Delta last year, because the leadership of the radical sect was so secretive.

"For now, Boko Haram is an invisible enemy. You don't have an identifiable person you can talk to," he said. By contrast, in the Niger Delta conflict, "at any time the government wanted a meeting, he rang them and said we'll come and talk. But nobody has come out openly and said 'we're Boko Haram'."

Nigerian Army Say Explosion at a Mosque In City of Maiduguri Today Is a "Major Incident"

At least 42 people were killed in the
Christmas Day church attacks
A blast has rocked an area near a mosque in the restive north-eastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri earlier today, with witnesses reporting four deaths.

In a BBC interview, Nigerian army spokesman Brig Gen Isa blamed the Islamist group Boko Haram. The group - which wants strict sharia law - has carried out scores of attacks, mainly in the north-east.

"There was a loud blast near the mosque just after the Friday prayers as people were trooping out of the mosque," one Maiduguri resident was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

"Everybody scampered to safety, leading to a stampede." Another witness said he had seen four bodies.

Brig Gen Isa said there had been a "major incident" which had caused casualties but did not give any further details.

Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes in Maiduguri and other cities which have been attacked by Boko Haram, especially in nearby Yobe state.

Internet Rumour Mill Goes Into Overdrive: Has Beyonce Given Birth to a Baby Girl Called Tiana-May Carter?

The Bootylicious singer and husband Jay-Z have not yet made any official announcement.  Yesterday there were rumours in the US that Beyonce was due to arrive at a private hospital in New York and this morning Twitter is awash with more rumours that the singer has given birth to a baby girl called Tiana-May Carter.
Back in September, the superstar revealed that she is due before the end of the New Year, with sources in the States claiming that she is now over nine months pregnant.

A story published yesterday by MediaTakeOut.com claimed that staff at St. Luke's
Roosevelt Hospital were being prepared for “Celeb VIPs” to arrive, with the celebrities in question reserving half of the labour suite

The website claimed that nurses at the hospital were “buzzing” at the news that the guests would most likely be Beyonce and Jay Z, with the baby suite being equipped to deliver three babies and sleep twelve people.

Beyonce has been spending most of her time in New York over the last few months and best friend Alicia Keys gave birth in the luxury ward, so it’s understandable that rumours are rife.
During a clip from her Live at Roseland DVD, Beyonce told fans: “Hello! It's September 23rd. Right now I’m actually shooting the video for 'Countdown' and I’m six months pregnant, pretending that my stomach is flat in body suits.”
