A Mexican woman who will become the oldest human ever to have lived when she turns 127 tomorrow [Aug. 31] has claimed chocolate is to credit for her longevity. Leandra Becerra Lumbreras was born on 31 August, 1887, meaning she was 27 at the beginning of World War I and 82 when man first set foot on the moon.

EBOLA SCARE: Doctor's Death Sparks Fear In Port Harcourt; 70 Persons Quarantined

The death of a doctor in Port Harcourt over Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) which was unknown to many has sparked fears across the country. This came as 70 persons have already been quarantined in Port Harcourt,  Rivers State.
Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu at a briefing in Abuja told journalists that the doctor who died in Port Harcourt had his blood sample tested positive after death. He also said that 70 persons have been placed under surveillance in Port Harcourt.

Despite requests to strike it down, a northern Indiana judge has allowed a feticide charge to stand against Purvi Patel, a woman who had taken measures to abort her fetus and underwent a premature delivery.

Patel, 33, had previously been charged with a Class A felony neglect in the death of an infant after, having given birth to what she believed was a stillborn and subsequently seeking hospital treatment, the body of a 28-week-old fetus was found.

Man Strangled Wife To Death In Ibadan

Residents of Ajiyo Olokun Olunde area, Oluyole LGA of Oyo State, on yesterday [Aug. 27], woke up to the wailings of a middle-aged woman, who was strangulated by her husband, Saidina Yusuf.

According to Nigerian Tribune, the neighbours were alerted by the shout of people living with the victim’s family, while Yusuf carried out the dastardly act. One of the landlords in the area, Mr Yusuf Rasaq, who spoke with newsmen, said he was coming from the mosque around 6.30 a.m when he was alerted by neighbours. He added that immediately, he went to their apartment to confront the man.

7-Year-Old Indian Girl Survives Being Buried Alive

A seven-year-old Indian girl who was allegedly buried alive by relatives in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh has been rescued by a villager. Police say relatives first tried to strangle her and then left her to die in a shallow grave. It is unclear why.

Cameroon's army has killed 27 members of Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram near a northern town, state radio said on Wednesday [Aug. 27], in a sign of growing cross-border activity by the militants.

The Boko Haram fighters crossed the border into Cameroon earlier this week, after attacking a military base and police station in Nigeria and apparently sending some 480 Nigerian troops retreating across the frontier.

A high-tension cable fell on a house and electrocuted a woman and her younger sister on Tuesday [Aug. 26] morning at Olumokun Street, in the Amukoko area of Lagos.

According to PUNCH:
The cable fell on the residence at about 3am, and subsequently sparked fire, which made many of its occupants to flee for safety. A woman, identified simply as Mama Ibrahim, with her 12-year-old younger sister, simply called Fatima, were however unlucky as they held on to an iron rod being used for canopy which had already gained current.

EBOLA SCARE: Federal Govt Shifts Schools Resumption To October 13

To ensure effective monitoring of the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) the Federal Government has directed that all public and private primary and secondary schools in the country must remain closed until October 13th, 2014.

The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, met with the States Commissioners for Education Forum in Abuja Tuesday [Aug. 26] to discuss how to handle the matter which continues to cause a lot of apprehension in the country.
